The discourse on the role of Indian
women in defending the culture will take us into the distant past that states
that women enjoyed rights sometime in the Vedic ages. Over time with constant
invasion by foreign invaders this all the more detoriated.
It is believed that the coming of the
Europeans was the last nail on the coffin as they brought the repugnant idea of
“women are objects of pleasure!” In reality this putrid image of women still remains
to be the same and is not going to change as far as the Indian society is
concerned. In spite of receiving education and joining various services, the
most important role of the Indian women continue to be in question. Although
after succeeding in their career these days, they manage homes which indicates
that the part played by Indian women still prolong to be the same.
Yes one can say that she has stepped
into the character of a bread winner for some households but the fact that she
is the bearer of the culture persists. The reason lies in the fact that Indian
are expected to carry the cultural heritage of the country irrespective of
caste, creed and colour. The
popular belief that women understand the significance of culture and tradition
better than anyone as compared. Hence they are the ones who have to retain this
responsibility of cultural teachers as well.
In a way it can be said that the Indian
society is still coping with the modern socio-economic changes. The roots of “women
should remain confined in the four walls” mentality lie deep in our culture. In
spite of everything the transformation of the role of Indian women has shaken
this ideology to some extent. That is correct modern women have altered the meaning
of “dharma” into a different angle. However the preconceived notion of women to
serve their men folk and their respective families even now continues. This is
a new way of exploiting the weaker sex that of asking her to bear family
responsibilities and making money at the same time. This could be a bitter
realization but this is the truth.
Yet it is an astonishing fact that Indian
women have sustained to live with this again as they have done in the past. This
is probably why the divorce rate of India does not stand a chance against other
developed countries. Indian women, themselves are dealing with this amendment. This
is because they are still learning the art of balancing work with home. This
means that they are trying their best to satisfy the needs of their husbands,
in-laws, children and even parents in some cases. Yes women in India have not
given up on this as they are stronger their counterparts which is why they have
displayed their skills of tolerating a lot in the past and certainly are
willing to put up with more at present. People looked up to the 21st
century as it was supposed to bring some drastic changes in favor of women, but
so far this is the only revolutionary modification that has been brought by it.
