Is it necessary?

Over the last few years I have noticed a steep rise in the crimes against women around the world. It would be unfair of me if I say that this has increased in my state only or my country because of the government and its lenient policies. It is very easy to blame others as we choose the government, then blame it for its failures or leave no scope to look for the loop holes in its governance. The point that I am trying to make is to try to put a stop against such crimes.
Now the answer to why are there so many cases that have taken place in the recent past is that in this era of women empowerment more and more of women are getting educated. They know their rights and duties very well which is why they do not shy away from registering a crime against them. They do not think twice while filing a complaint with the authorities these days as they believe in the impartial judgment of the judiciary of their land. This is one reason why we can see a rise in the cases that involve violence against women. There are no doubts that there still who do not register cases and voice their concerns like yester years but many have taken a stand against domestic abuse, rape and other kinds of violence. My request to our society is that they should not be looked down upon but treated with equal respect.
Terms like rape, marital rape, domestic violence, abuse, eve teasing and human trafficking have become quite prevalent. The problem here lies with us; yes we comprise of the society and it is high time that we get up and make the world a better place to live for our children. We make the system and then one day we realize that it has gone beyond our reach to mend its untamed ways. It starts engulfing our rights and we watch it our eyes wide open, of course by pretending that everything is fine.
For instance a few days back I read it in the newspaper how a young girl was teased by some boys on her way back from her tuition classes. She tried to raise an alarm but everyone on the road was busy pretending that everything was normal. In this case the girl was strong willed, so she managed to escape the situation and report the matter to the police. God forbid what if the night of 16th December 2012 were repeated once again that day? We would have shown our solidarity by lighting candles and participating in the protest marches. I would like to ask is this necessary by any chance? Why can’t we stop that eve teaser today so that tomorrow he is scared of us and would go to the extent of raping an innocent girl?
Again it is not possible for the police and government to take care of each of us individually. It completely depends on us as we have to protect our rights and respect others. We as citizens of the world need to be aware of our duties and perform them. Merely blaming the government for its lack of concern and picking up fights on streets or giving the scope of such break outs is not about following the path of non violence. The doctrine of non violence teaches us to be patient and respect others. Let us put an end to all this by making the future better secured by helping the Daminis, Bhanwari Devis, and Scarletts when needed and save ourselves from burning candles anymore!
